Academy Information
The Dragon Fencing Academy is York Region's premier fencing academy and club. We are a private fencing and martial arts school offering expert instruction in western Olympic sport fencing and eastern Japanese kenjutsu,
We teach Olympic fencing styles in foil, épée, and sabre to youth, teens, and adults. Our practices are 7 days a week and integrate fitness, sports psychology and theory. On Sundays we offer Sugino style Tenshin Shoden Katori Shinto Ryu kenjutsu to teens and adults. Other services available include: fencing equipment rental, fencing sparring sessions, martial arts lessons, and private yoga lessons. For corporate clients we can offer on-site fencing workshops, demonstrations, and full weekly programs.
We have beginner, recreational, intermediate, advanced, and private classes. We offer spring break and summer camps for youth and teens, which consists of Full day (8 hours) day (4-hours) fencing, martial arts and yoga specific exercises, activities, drills, games, sparring, and meditation. All fencing courses qualify for the Children's Fitness Tax Credit for children under 16.
Our pristine facilities include a fully heated and air conditioned fencing studio with a professionally engineered free-floating maple hardwood floor. Our highly skilled and educated coaching staff provide professional expert instruction with over125+ years of combined coaching, teaching, and fencing experience.
We are located in the Highway 7 and Leslie area of Richmond Hill bordering Thornhill and Markham. We are easily accessible by public transit along the VIVA and YRT routes and by automobile via major highways 7, 404 and the ETR 407.
We offer a safe, fun, social environment to learn the ancient art and sport of fencing. Fencing teaches individuals good sportsmanship, to compete with honour, dignity, and determination.

We offer the following services:
Fencing Lessons
Group Lessons for foil, épée, & sabre
Lessons are either 60 minutes or 90 minutes each with a low teacher/student ratio(5:1). Lessons include warm-up, stretching, footwork, blade work and sparring. A great way to get physically and mentally fit. Have the opportunity to meet new friends, train with them and then challenge them to a friendly duel.
Private Lessons - individual one-on-one
For those who need more focused individual attention. Lessons are 10 minutes to 1 hour intervals. Private lessons can be scheduled at off hour practices times as well. Great for refining specific techniques, gaining more insight and skills to defeat that particular opponent.
Semi-Private Lessons (2+ persons)
Similar to private lessons, semi-private can have you and a friend refine your techniques and skills together.
Kenjutsu
- We offer authentic classical Japanese swordsmanship.
- Katori Shinto Ryu - 13th century 2 person sword vs sword kata
- Iaido - Muso Shinden Eishin Ryu - the art of drawing the sword lessons
- Ono-Ha Itto Ryu - The one stroke Style
- Beginner sword techniques courses
- Workshops and weekly classes
- Stances, strikes, blocks, kamae, and kata forms
