YAGYU SHINGAN RYU
What is Yagyu Shingan Ryu?
Yagyu Shingan Ryu Taijutsu is a comprehensive martial arts system
involving the study of armed and unarmed techniques for use by
soldiers and samurai on the battlefield. It was created in the early
Edo period (c. 1600 AD) with the express purpose to provide warriors
with the skills necessary for close-quarters combat. It is the
ancestor of modern jujutsu and aikido.
Many of Japan’s modern martial arts have their roots in the Yagyū
schools of combat. Morihei Ueshiba, the founder of Aikido, was a
student of Yagyu Shingan Ryu. Jigoro Kano, the founder of judo, also
studied Yagyu Shingan Ryu Taijutsu (Edo-line) under the seventh
lineal-headmaster, Ohshima Masateru.
About Us
We are an authorized group of practitioners that trains in Yagyu
Shingan Ryu Taijutsu. We follow the direction of Kajitsuka Yasushi
Sensei, soke of Yagyu Shingan Ryu Taijutsu (Edo-Line). Kajitsuka
Sensei is the 11th generation headmaster of the school. The study
group leader is Scott Brodie.
The Tradition of Yagyu Shingan Ryu in Canada
We are proud to be the first official study group for Yagyu Shingan
Ryu (Edo-Line) in Canada. Yasushi Kajitsuka Soke visits our group on
an annual basis. Members of this study group have the unique
opportunity to apply for official membership with Kajitsuka Sensei’s
organization once they demonstrate commitment to the art.
